Every hospitalized child will have a large, private room to accommodate parents staying overnight. Even the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) will include 40 private rooms. Our team of more than 150 pediatric physicians in 40 pediatric specialties will work with nurses, therapists and allied health specialists who have devoted their careers to caring for children. As a teaching hospital, training the next generation of pediatric experts will be done in collaboration with the Michigan State College of Human Medicine. Spectrum Health's Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is the only hospital in western Michigan dedicated to providing comprehensive care to children. It serves as a referral center for newborns, infants, children and adolescents throughout the state. We provide medical care generally not available at community hospitals. It does not compete for patients. Helen DeVos Children's provides many unduplicated services. It is a special resource for local health care centers and hometown physicians. The Pediatric Heme/Onc/BMT unit is a 15-bed unit with 7 positive pressure beds with hard-line monitoring to accommodate BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant.) We are the regional referral center and have 6 Pediatric Oncologists and 2 BMT physicians on staff. The nursing staff in Pediatrics work closely and collaboratively with physicians, social workers, child life and discharge coordinators to provide care. Located in Grand Rapids, a community that takes pride in its 'small town' convenience and amenities, Helen DeVos Children's offers big-city expertise. Helen DeVos Children's cares for more than 600 children per month with cancer. and, has the only pediatric bone marrow transplant program on the western side of the state.
